Floating Shelves or Upper Cabinets? How to Choose What’s Right for You

When it comes to designing or remodeling a kitchen, one of the most debated choices is whether to go with floating shelves or upper cabinets. Each option has its own aesthetic and functional benefits, and the right answer really depends on how you use your space, what you want to display (or hide), and the overall look you're going for.

Let’s break it down.

Floating Shelves: Light, Airy, and On-Trend

Floating shelves have surged in popularity over the past few years, especially in modern, coastal, and farmhouse-style kitchens. They offer an open, airy look and allow you to showcase beautiful dishware, glassware, or curated decor.

Pros of Floating Shelves:

  • Visually opens up the kitchen

  • Creates space for styling and personalization

  • Easier access to everyday items

  • Often less expensive than cabinets

Things to Consider:

  • Offers less storage overall

  • Requires thoughtful styling to avoid clutter

  • Everything is on display, so it may not work for everyone

Floating shelves work especially well when paired with lower cabinetry that provides ample storage or in kitchens where minimalism is a priority.

Upper Cabinets: Classic, Practical, and Flexible

Upper cabinets have long been a kitchen staple, and for good reason. They offer enclosed, flexible storage and help maximize space in both large and small kitchens.

Pros of Upper Cabinets:

  • Keeps everything hidden and organized

  • Maximizes vertical storage

  • Can be customized with glass inserts, lighting, or unique finishes

  • Works with any design style, from traditional to ultra-modern

Things to Consider:

  • Can make a small kitchen feel more enclosed

  • Less opportunity to show off beautiful items

Upper cabinets are a great choice if you prefer a clutter-free countertop and want to store appliances, pantry goods, or less attractive items behind closed doors.

Can You Have Both? Yes. And It’s Gorgeous.

One of our favorite tricks is combining the two. For example, use floating shelves above a coffee bar or beside a window, and upper cabinets everywhere else. This hybrid approach gives you the best of both worlds: storage where you need it and style where you want it.

At Woodsman Kitchens & Floors, our designers help you think through layout, function, and aesthetics so your kitchen works for you: whether that means floating shelves, upper cabinets, or a clever mix of both.
